My first job was working in the international legal department of Coca-Cola. I was 16 years old and was looking for a summer job. A friend of my mothers was a very senior executive at the company. He offered to get me a job based entirely on family connections.

He called one day and said that the best job he could find for me was working on the shipping dock. During the summer, I would have to arrive at 5 am and load trucks for eight hours in a non-air-conditioned warehouse. I told him I loved the company, wanted to work there, and immediately accepted the job, despite my huge disappointment. He called back an hour later and said that the warehouse job had been a test, that my real job was in the air-conditioned legal department, and that I needed to wear a suit!

He had used the warehousing position to test me to see how willing I was to work hard and whether I loved the company enough to accept a manual job. Lesson learned: in your job search, people will test you, be ready! Years later, Coca-Cola would fire me from a different position and tell me that I was not a team player and that I should be an entrepreneur. I had never considered that before. But within a year, I did start a business that eventually grew to 700 employees.
