Today Amazon is said to be one of the most famous and most used online app stores that run to every corner of the world. But, isn’t it fascinating how a store solely based to sell books, today has different kinds categories like clothes, electronics, stationery, crafts, foot wares and many more? It was all possible by the hard work of one and only Jeff Bezos. His never-giving-up nature brought him this far, and now he is known as one of the richest men in the world. Jeff Bezos is an American entrepreneur and owns both Amazon and the Washington Post. 

History of Bezos

Jeff Bezos was born on 12th January 1964 in New Mexico. Bezos was interested in computers and software since he was young, so he graduated from Princeton University in 1986 in computer science and electrical engineering. His early interest in ‘how things work’ made him turn his parents’ garage into a laboratory and his whole house into a wire full mess. When Bezos was a teenager, his parents moved to Miami, where his love for computers started, and so he graduated as valedictorian of his high school. Can you believe that Bezos was just a high school student when he started his first business called the ‘Dream Institute,’ which was through an educational summer camp for 4th to 6th graders?

After he graduated from Princeton, Bezos worked at several firms like Fitel, Banker’s trust, and D.E. Shaw. Then, in 1990, Bezos became the youngest vice president at D.E. Shaw. But he wanted something more. Something he can proudly call his own. So, by 1994, Bezos took the biggest risk in his life by quitting at D.E. Shaw and moving to Seattle. After quitting, he stepped into the emerging world of e-commerce. He finally targeted his untouched potential into the market and opened an online store for books. His online bookstore slowly and steadily gained success and became the talk of one of the biggest internet success stories. 

Bezos and His Success with Amazon.com

In the mid-’90s, i.e., 1995, Bezos decided to name his online bookstore Amazon.com. The thought flourished in his mind after wandering near the South American river. At first, Bezos asked his friends or people he knew (around 300 in number) to beta check his site. All of the 300 people were extremely satisfied by what Bezos has created. By the end of the first month of amazon, a few of the employees started to develop software along with Bezos in his garage. Slowly they started to expand their operation and developing into a two-bedroom house equipped with three sun micro stations. 

In 1997, Bezos decided to make Amazon.com public, which led many market analysts to question whether it could hold its position in the market while many traditional retailers launched their e-commerce site. But the analysts soon got the answers, with the humongous success of amazon.com. Just 2 years later the launch, Amazon made it become an e-commerce leader. Slowly with the success of amazon, Bezos started to expand the amazon offerings by adding sales of CDs and Videos to cloth and electronics to toys and stationaries, etc. All of this started with his decision to the partnership with major retailers. 

By 2011, Amazon was rocking the e-commerce industry with yearly sales that jumped from $510,000 in 1995 to over $17 billion. Just like that, in 2018, Amazon was said to be valued at more than $1 trillion. Amazon was the second company after Apple to ever hit that record. When it comes to global warming, Bezos released another great product famously known as kindle as e-books. It is a digitally handles book reader that helps readers buy and download the original book as an e-book. Kindle was launched in 2007 and has been the reader’s customer favorite. Following that, in 2011, Bezos released the Kindle fire, which is the companies next-generation tablet. In an interview with Bezos with ABC News, he said, “We haven’t built the best tablet at a certain price. We have built the best tablet at any price.” With the launch of this tablet in the markets, Apple had to buckle up for its race in Amazon.

Bezos Success with Blue Origin

Not only on earth, but Jeff Bezos has stepped into the space world with his new launch called ‘Blue origin.’ The particular aerospace company was founded in 2000. Its main focus was to lower the cost of space travels to make it accessible to even normal earning humans. Bezos once said that “We are going to build a road to space. And then amazing things will happen.” In 2016, Bezos decided to make blue origin public and invited reports to its headquarters in Washington. He gave tours to the reporters and explained that the company’s vision is visiting and colonizing space.

In 2017, Bezos promised to sell about $1 billion of Amazon stock to fund the blue origin. With this commitment, Jeff has recently revealed the first moon lander of blue origin and that they have started conducting test flights of its New Shepard rocket. In the coming future, the Shepard rocket will send tourists into space for their enjoyment. In August 2019, Nasa announced that the Bezos space company is one of the 13 companies collaborating on tech projects to reach the moon and mars. 

Bezos as Philanthropist

In the past, Bezos has been publicly accused of his lack of participation in society as a philanthropist, as he is one of the richest men in the world. Soon after the realization, Bezos released many funds to care for the homeless, Earth, and many more. In 2018, Bezos launched his ‘Day One Fund’ for homeless families and low-income communities. After his announcement for the same, Jeff Bezos asked his followers to donate and help him raise this fund. Likewise, on February 17, 2020, Bezos launched another fund called Earth Fund to Fight the effects of climate change. Jeff Bezos donates almost $10 billion as an initiative to this fund. Many Scientists, activists, and NGOs have participated with Bezos to increase awareness in society.

Jeff Bezos’s journey from being a normal boy to being one of the richest men in the world is not hidden. A few decades back, there was no Amazon or any online commerce store available for our needs (not one that we know). But today, Amazon, One of Bezos greatest foundations, has become our basic needs. Bezos’s achievements include Amazon, more than $2 billion charity, Owing Washington post, blue origins, and many more. Of course, it is not easy to run any foundation at such a scale and manage millions of people to work for employment and pay them their salaries. But Jeff Bezos has made this possible by his extremely great leadership quality.

  • Not afraid of failure: 

By many of the Bezos posts in the past, we can say that Bezos is not afraid of failures. His statement that confirms the above line is, “To invent, you have to experiment, and if you know in advance that it’s going to work, it’s not an experiment.” This quote is from Jeff Bezos Amazon shareholder letters. It shows that rather than being afraid of failures, He values them so much in his life. But even so, in “Invent and Wander: The Collected Writings of Jeff Bezos,” he explains to us that there is a huge difference between a good failure and a bad failure. 

He quoted that, “If we build a new fulfillment center and it’s a calamity, that’s just bad execution. But when we are developing a new product or service or experimenting somehow, and it doesn’t work, that’s OK. That’s a great failure.” According to him, you have to know the outcomes of your failures to know whether you can afford the failure or not. Getting to know and handle the failure tells us that Jeff Bezos is a great leader and shows us a glimpse of why Amazon is a great success.

  • Risk-taking ability:

One of the reasons for his success is his risk-taking ability. Many are afraid to take risks at the time when you are earning decently. But Jeff Bezos showed us that if you are ready to take the risk, there is a great success waiting for you at the end. Bezos was the vice president of D.E. Shaw at the time when he decided to quit the job. After being the pioneer of his foundation dream, Jeff Bezos has become an inspiration to many.

He has often said in interviews that he is ready to teach younger people who have skills and is willing to risk anything for their dream job. But, unfortunately, these kinds of leadership qualities are seen in very few, and Jeff Bezos is one of them.

Jeff Bezos has a great mind that can think on a long-term basis. “Be stubborn on the long-term vision, but be flexible on the details.” This quote is one of the best ones Jeff Bezos has given us. He gives an example of kindle, Amazon prime, which are the key offerings of Amazon, to explain his long-term vision rule. He says that Amazon would have never succeeded if he had a short-term vision goal for the amazon because he would have stopped expanding business as soon as amazon would have experienced its first success.

Staying true to yourself even at the top of the world is the greatest quality any leader should possess. Jeff Bezos, in the beginning, must have gone through a lot of struggles to bring amazon to the place where it is now. He says that it is essential to defy criticism and keep working on your principle. Like many other companies, Amazon must have (or still) goes through many criticisms by the audience themselves. But as they say, a good leader takes hate as their inspiration and leads its team on a greater path while walking hand in hand with them.

Respecting others, even while being one of the richest men on earth, must be hard. People may definitely think that Jeff Bezos must be a rude person as he has a lot of money with him. But they are wrong. Jeff Bezos is as humble as he was before the Amazon. He respects all of his employees, even if they are at the farthest end of the world. He does not forget to acknowledge them at every chance he gets. This makes him a great leader.

Jeff once quoted that “he is obsessed about customers, not competitors.” If anything ever goes wrong, then customers satisfaction is their first and foremost priority. Every survey till now had shown that the customer care service of amazon is one of the best. They are quick with their actions and are always ready to rectify their mistakes. This kind of service by an employee is only possible if their leader possesses all of these qualities. Jeff Bezos has always kept his ears uptight for his customer’s likes and dislikes. He modifies his services according to the choice of his beloved customers. From time to time, Amazon takes surveys to satisfy their customer’s needs and get their feedback on the service they are providing. In the past, Amazon has learned through surveys like this is that the customers mostly hate delays and defects in their delivery. They very passionately address these issues, even if it is the smallest issue. Sources say that from amazon metrics, it was revealed that a 0.1-second delay in any process equals a 1% drop in their customers. So, Jeff Bezos, with his precious employees around the world, works tirelessly in improving delays like this. Jeff Bezos, in past years, has repeatedly said that less is more. Jeff Bezos has never been a money-centric person. His first and foremost priority has always been his customers’ happiness. So, he works hard in keeping the cost as much low as he can afford to keep his audience happy. Just like that, with less in his mind, he gets more. Customers of Amazon are always more than happy and leave great feedback for them too. 

“One advantage — perhaps a somewhat subtle one — of a customer-driven focus is that it aids a certain type of proactivity. When we’re at our best, we don’t wait for external pressures. Instead, we are internally driven to improve our services, adding benefits and features, before we have to,” said Jeff Bezos.

He is a risk-taker, and thus, success follows him. After 15 days of him stepping down as the CEO of Amazon, he plans to give space a visit. Yes, he is planning to go to space. He’ll be doing so on 20th July on the first crewed flight of his new Shepard rocket ship made by his own company ‘Blue Origin.’  Such a great risk at this position when Amazon is flying with colors, and its flight does not seem to come down anytime soon. 

To inspire you all a bit more than ever, let me tell you that Jeff Bezos is now 48 years old and is ready to take that big risk. If he can, then you can too. Right? Often, the aspect that weighs us down the maximum at landscapes is one huge mission we don’t feel like doing. And if we determine to procrastinate, the intellectual burden continues developing because of the time passing by. The worst element is that fending off that mission doesn’t remedy the issue. We have to work for it every day. Set your goals, work for them. Keep taking risks. Don’t give up. Respect others. Do it just like Jeff Bezos is doing it and one day succeeds, and you will work hand in hand.
