1. What are the various layers of the OBIEE 11g Repository?

Zip Libraries

-Repository from which the zip libraries are downloaded from the OBIEE server.

-User home directory for storing repository information.

-Private repositories for storing personal files, such as project files and customizations.

Public Repositories – Repositories that are shared with others. For security concerns, all other repositories must run under a membership account that has been granted access to this repository by a member of the remote group.

Web Services- Clients that are connected through Web Services to the repository.

2. What are the different modes of operation for OBIEE?

Repository- This is the area where all repository operations are performed, including uploading files, deleting files, creating new folders, creating sub-folder hierarchies, adding users, and managing local schedules. The only mode of operation is modifying. There are no other modes within this layer shown in UI or Command Line interface.

Collection- This is the area under which you can browse the collections of zip libraries stored in a private repository or public repository on the OBIEE server. You can also create new collections of zip libraries here. This area is also called a “home” and there are no access modes of operations within this layer.

Web Service- This is the area under which you can browse the collection of zip libraries stored in a private repository or public repository on the OBIEE server. You can also create new collections of zip libraries here. There are no access modes of operation within this layer shown in the UI or Command Line interface.

3. How many repositories can be configured in an OBIEE 11g environment?

There can be three types of repositories.

Default Repository -This repository is used for public collections and zip libraries. This type of repository is created when the default value is selected during the creation of an OBIEE server.

The location for this repository is <OBIEE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\domain1\obiee\repository .

Personal Repository -This repository is used for personal collection and zip libraries. This type of repository is created when a user creates his/her repository after login into OBIEE 11g. The location for this repository could be a network UNC path or a local disk. If it is stored on a local disk then the path may be of the form:<OBIEE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\domain1\repository,<repository_folder>.

The location for this repository is <OBIEE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\domain1.

Group Repository -This repository is used for public collections and zip libraries. This type of repository is created when the default value for group membership is selected during the creation of an OBIEE server. The location for this repository could be a network UNC path or a local disk. If it is stored on a local disk then the path may be of the form <OBIEE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\domain1\repository,<repository_folder>.

The location for this repository is <OBIEE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\domain1.

4. Is it possible to have multiple Oracle BI Servers in an OBIEE 11g environment?

Yes, you can have multiple Oracle BI Server environments in one OBIEE 11g environment. This environment can be configured on different machines or the same machine.

5. Can anyone have multiple Oracle BI Servers in one OBIEE 11g installation?

Yes, one can have multiple Oracle BI Servers in one OBIEE 11g installation.

6. Will a single repository create multiple collections?

No, one can’t create multiple collections in a single repository. One repository will only create a single public collection implicitly when you deploy an application in this repository. You can also provide access to other users by adding them to the membership group of this collection.

7. What is a Cluster in OBIEE?

A cluster is a group of OBIEE servers that share the same database and repository. Clusters are used to scale up the user population of Oracle BI across multiple servers. OBIEE supports three types of clusters, namely;

Data Sharing Cluster – In this type of cluster, the data from one cluster member is available to other members in read-only mode.

Data Replication Cluster – In this type of cluster, data from one member is copied to other members that belong to this cluster.

Data Synchronization Cluster – In this type of cluster, all nodes in a replication or sharing cluster send their updates at regular intervals.

8. What is the difference between Data Sharing, Replication, and Synchronization Clusters?

Data Sharing Cluster – The data that is shared among the members of the cluster is readable only. This can be used for applications that don’t process data locally or need to access this data through a shared network. The starting points for the sharing cluster are all nodes in a cluster. If either member of a sharing cluster fails, then all members in that cluster will also fail. On the other hand, any node can be added to a sharing cluster without affecting other members in that cluster. Replication Cluster – The data in a replication cluster is replicated. If one member fails, the data in the other copies will also fail. 

Data Synchronization Cluster – This type of cluster creates a replication or sharing cluster. Data Synchronization clusters are used when members are not able to synchronize their updates with each other on their own.

9. What is the supported number of members in a Data Sharing Cluster?

Data sharing clusters support up to 10 members per cluster. This is true for all the cluster types.

10. Does Oracle BI Server support clustering?

Oracle BI Server doesn’t support clustering in the sense that you can have more than one Oracle BI Server environment running on one physical machine. There is no technical limitation, but we don’t recommend having multiple Oracle BI Servers on one physical machine. This will create problems while registering and deregistering applications and their components like a designer, modeler, and query builder.

11. What is the difference between a Data Sharing and a Data Replication Cluster?

Data Sharing- The starting points for sharing clusters are all nodes in a cluster. If either member of a sharing cluster fails, then all members in that cluster will also fail. On the other hand, any node can be added to a sharing cluster without affecting other members in that cluster. 

Replication – The data in a replication cluster is replicated.

12. Explain the main features of OBIEE 11G?

The following are the main features of OBIEE 11G:

Secure Web Application – This is a new type of application that allows you to expose an Oracle BI repository as a Web resource. Using the same URL, you can access both the repository and deployed applications. Security Model – The security model has been built to support multiple authentication modes, access control policies, authentication context, multiple roles separation.

Repository Deployment Wizard – This wizard simplifies the process of deploying an application to an existing cluster or creating a new cluster by offering one-time or multi-time deployment options. SQL Dump Utility – This utility can be invoked from OBIEE General options under the “Operations Management -> SQL Dump” tab.

13. Give a detailed explanation of the Oracle Business Intelligence Applications?

Oracle OBIEE 11g consists of the following applications:

Oracle BI Publisher 11g – This application is used to create the presentation format for the reports. It also allows you to create any type of report using data stored in an Oracle BI repository.

Oracle BI Enterprise Data Quality Plus (EDQ+) – This component enables your applications to integrate with third-party data quality systems.

Oracle BI Query Builder Plus (QB+) – This component provides a “face” for your business intelligence queries and thereby enables one to create complex queries using different types of filters, parameters, loops.

Oracle BI Designer 11g – This component allows you to create queries using queries that have already been created in Oracle BI Publisher. It also allows you to reuse these queries in other applications.

Oracle BI Query Performance Explorer (QPE) – This application provides a graphical view of query performance. Using QPE, one can identify the bottlenecks in a report or model or learn more about the performance issues of an existing query or an ad hoc report that is being executed by executing the same. Reports can be executed using this tool while querying data stored in an Oracle BI repository.

Oracle BI Dashboard 11g – This application is used to create reports that can be accessed through the Web. Reports created in this application can be accessed via different types of browsers.

Oracle BI Modeler Plus (M+) – This component enables you to create dynamic models of your data using BSP techniques. M+ also allows you to make changes to existing models.

Oracle BI Query Performance Analysis (QPA) – This tool is used to analyze performance issues of existing queries or ad-hoc reports that have been executed by executing the same. QPA can also be used for tuning BSPs inside the M modeler Gateway application.

Oracle BI Query Express (QB+) for JDBC Drivers – This component allows you to create a custom JDBC driver for BI applications. It also enables the integration of these drivers with Oracle BI Designer 11g.

Oracle BI Designer 11g Sharing – This component makes it possible to share data between two or more servers within the same environment.
