Home Depot, Inc. or Home Depot is one of the world’s largest companies in the home designing industry. They are the biggest construction and design company in the United States. Their business involves supplying construction tools and products along with similar services. 

Home Depot is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and is led by Craig Menear, who is the Chairman and CEO of the organization. The company has an annual revenue of 10 billion USD as of 2019 and employs more than 50,000 employees in the United States. 

It is a publicly-traded company. These shares are free to be purchased on the stock exchange, and trade as HD on the New York Stock Exchange. 

The company has expanded outside the United States and serves in countries like Canada and Mexico along with regions like Puerto Rico, Guam, and Virgin Islands (US).

History

Home Depot was started by Bernard Marcus along with Arthur Blank, Pat Farrah, and Ron Brill in 1978 as a company that provides home building services. 

Home Depot stores were first opened in 1979, in Atlanta, Georgia. By 1981, the company opened stores in Florida and California, soon expanding to the other American states like Dallas, Ohio, Nevada, Arizona, etc. 

It had become the United States’ biggest home building company by 1989, expanding to almost all of the American states and establishing a firm hold on the home improvement market. 

Since then, Home Depot has largely expanded its business adding furnishing and electricals to its portfolio. 

The company launched an online furnishing store, 10 Crescent Lane, in 2005, later also opening their online lightning store by the name Paces Trading Company. 

In 2006, Home Depot bought the home décor company Home Decorators Collection and rebranded it as Home Depot Direct Division. They also procured the home supplies company Hughes Supply, later in the same year and renamed it Home Depot Supply. 

Subsidiaries

Home Depot’s subsidiary operates under the name The Home Depot Pro. This subsidiary looks after the functioning and the operations of all of Home Depot’s interline brands. 

The headquarters of The Home Depot Pro is located in Jacksonville, Florida. The company is the world’s leading distributor of maintenance, repair, and operation products (MRO) in the US. The company usually supplies products for several businesses. Their products include plumbing supplies, janitorial products, as well as, security supplies. 

The Home Depot Pro was established in 1978. The company was previously known as Wilmar Industries and later as Interline Brands before being renamed The Home Depot Pro in 2018 after the acquisition of Interline Brands by Home Depot in 2015. The cost of this purchase was around $1.6 billion.
