The hiring comprises four basic steps and it ranges from one week to three months depending on the job profile and the recruiting team.

  1. PHONE SCREEN INTERVIEW

This is the first step once a candidate has been shortlisted for a role. Here the recruiter or an HR representative gets on a call with the candidate asking for an about the candidate’s resume, basic background questions, and experience if any. So one must have a resume prepared beforehand.

  1. VIDEO INTERVIEW

In this round, the candidate’s results have been declared and they are shortlisted for further interview rounds, one of which is a Video Interview, where an HR Representative is on a video call with the candidate. The part varies for various job roles. For example:

  • For an IT/Software role, the interview questions and tests will be based on data structures, various programming languages (in preference to the job role), algorithms, technical assessments, etc.
  • For a Product Manager role, the interviewer will expect answers to strategy questions and case studies.
  • Various other roles and responsibilities are also involved in the candidate’s application to a specific job profile, whose interview questions differ in other ways, which also includes amazon online assessments which might be role-specific.
  • Some basic questions like “Why did you choose amazon?”, “Give an overview of your education background”, “What drives you in life”, “Why did you choose this profile? What do you know about it?”, Where do you see yourself in the next few years?” or behavioral questions like “Tell me about the time when you failed

These are few questions that can be answered by the candidates of every background applying for their desired position.

  1. ONSITE INTERVIEW

As we all are aware of the current covid situation, it is not possible for an onsite interviewer to be conducted, so virtual interviews are being conducted.

But basically, what happens is that the candidate spends the entire day with 5-6 current staffers and an interviewing expert is involved in this round. The candidate will be questioned on their opinion on the job role, product advice, their contribution and impact to the company, user-related affairs, etc.

  1. OFFER or NO-OFFER

After all these rounds are completed, all the interviewers have an interviewing panel to decide on the candidature related to the job profile. They share their judgments and opinions on the candidate and declare the result.

The result can be in favor of the candidate or can be not. If in favor, the salary expectations will be discussed followed by the joining. (One should negotiate the salary demand about the job role and their performance!)

Then the offer letter is given to the candidate by the company through email (Candidate must have their email address updated).

To be involved in this process, the candidate must have a few mandatory lists of things prepared-

  • The updated resume/CV
  • The cover letter
  • All mark sheets and certifications
  • Experience letter from the previous employer (if any)

Mistakes to Avoid During the Hiring Process

  • Once a candidate has been through their Initial Screening Process, they must keep a check on their mails regularly. Sometimes, important emails are found to be in the “Spam Folder”, so make sure to check your spam folders as well.
  • Not knowing about the company and the role/position you are applying to is a big NO!. Always study about the company from its establishment, work environment to what built your interest in the company.
  • Having an outdated resume/CV can lead to rejection in the first step itself. Therefore, have an updated resume/CV at all times.
  • Not being aware of what is written in your resume is a mistake. Stick to your resume no matter what.
  • Being overconfident is fine sometimes, but not always, especially when you appearing for a renowned company or industry. Always be polite to the recruiter and you’ll see how smoothly your hiring process goes. Have a positive attitude and body language.
