Formerly known as the University of the City of New York, New York University (NYU) is considered one of the top-tier universities in the United States. They have unique resources for private research and high selectivity criteria with an overall acceptance rate of 16.2% and are therefore often confused as an Ivy League college. But they are not though it is easy to see why this confusion arises. With a list of alumni ranging from Nobel laureates like Mohamed ElBaradei to Hollywood’s finest like Lady Gaga, Kristen Bell, and Angelina Jolie, and so on, it is sure to attract the attention of students looking for a good education as well as cultural expansion.

Chartered 190 years ago in 1831 by the New York State Legislature, a group of New Yorkers led by the Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, its motto has always been Perstare et praestare which essentially means ‘To preserve and to excel’. In following their motto they have to be very strict with their policies while accepting students hence the low acceptance rate of about 16%.

But that is not all, an Institution this big knows to select the most efficient teaching and non-teaching staff, who not only will have to be excellent in what they do but also have to maintain a proper but not overly strict code of conduct for the safety and inclusion of everyone in the campus. Therefore, anyone who breaks these conducts be it a student or a staff will have to bear the consequences for their violation. Some cases may even lead to the termination of their academic or professional career. Dropping out of a student is also considered termination in NYU.

Students Termination Policy

As mentioned before, students at times want to terminate their course due to various personal reasons. In such cases, NYU follows a lengthy yet necessary process to help them in any way they can. The institution believes in the importance of academic progress so termination is not something they want from their students often. So the NYU Board of Trustees can come up with a process of consultation and decision.

The consultation committee includes the faculty of the student because they are the ones who deal with them all the time and therefore are much more involved in the student’s life. The President of the Student’s Council of that particular school remains there as an ad hoc member. Now, this committee at first tries to figure out if there is any problem that the student is facing that can be solved by other ways, say reorganization of the course structure or session, re-evaluating the past five years of administrative structure, or checking the financial status of the student.

But if all options fail and termination is inevitable the President of the University has the final authority in it. A rare termination of an entire academic program which mainly happens due to funding shortage follows a similar procedure but the committee here excludes the President of the Student’s Council.

Termination of students due to misconduct is an even longer process. If the misconduct is regarding research then after getting a report of the allegation an initial inquiry is made by The Dean if the misconduct seems to follow the “Principle” (the code) and sufficient credibility has been presented. A formal investigation happens if the Dean determines so. If the investigation result says that the misconduct has been sustained then the hearing committee decides the fate of the student which involves termination and also penalty (decided as per the nature of the misconduct).

Faculty Termination Policy

Here unlike the students who were dropping out cause’s termination, there is a difference between termination and resignation. If a faculty member willingly chooses to stop working in the institution it is called resignation, but if the employee is involuntarily separated from their job then it is termination. In NYU approval from the Office of Employee Relations is needed before termination. If the termination is due to misconduct, which is the case mostly, the employee is not eligible for re-employment in any position related to NYU.

Conclusion

To sum it up NYU is a well-renowned college in the United States which is also referred to as The New Ivy by several magazines in the past decade. To maintain their integrity they follow strict rules and violation of them may lead to consequences. Termination of the individual is a severe consequence and NYU takes into account that no unjust termination happens by ensuring proper investigation of the misconduct by The Dean and the law enforcement departments. Sometimes students want to terminate their academic sessions. As mentioned above, these matters affect the future of an individual so they introduced a consultation board to guide them every step of the way. The policy of termination from NYU is therefore good and efficient.
