Is modeling a good career?

Introduction

Models are people that endorse a particular brand and its products by presenting them to the public in a manner that is both desirable and necessary. They are signed with model organizations and are taken all over the world for shows and promotions of brands. Here is the topic- Is modeling a good career?

The life of a model as seen by the public is luxurious and vibrant but like any other job, they do have their kind of struggles. In today’s world, where everybody type is considered beautiful, there are a lot of advantages to the model community. Instead of sticking to the orthodox thin and tall models, they are going out of their way to hire plus-size models. This is because the world has come to face the reality that even if we’re healthy and we eat right, probably, we do not have a body shape that is considered desirable and healthy.

Models are not only for clothes, there are hand, face, and skin models. The treacherous journey that they go through is often seen as a desirable lifestyle to others that are watching. The publicity, the fame, the importance they are given all come with a price.  Models also get to work with high-profile clients who can help introduce them into the fashion industry and therefore take on as ambassadors, athletes, partners, and influencers for certain brands.

Pros

  • Different experiences

As a model, you will be expected to communicate with a variety of people. Your body posture is expected to be perfect when you are a model representative. The way you carry yourself, your choice of outfit, and your bearing holds a significant position when in conversation with others. Ideally, your etiquette is of premier level and your manners are proper. These specifications will help you even if you choose to pursue a career other than modeling.

  • Privileges

A model is given a lot of things free of charge. Flight tickets, tours, invitations as VIP to parties, and many such advantages. Every time a model goes for a show, sometimes, they are allowed to keep the outfits they modeled in! These depend on the brands you shoot fr. sometimes if you shoot for a high-profile designer, what you get to keep may be a limited edition set of a new release. That too, before the entire world can get their hands on it!

  • Salary

Models are paid very handsomely. These again depend on the brand they are shooting for but more often than always they can earn up to $1000 in a day. Models can also freelance. That means that if you are a student and cannot afford to miss classes every other day, you can easily use your extra time out for modeling. This is also an advantage of being a model.

  • Exposure and fame.

The level of reach you get as a model is sky-high. You can become famous through your photographs and your campaigns. This is how you will be able to get in touch with high-profile executives to shoot for bigger campaigns and such. This fame can help you introduce yourself to bigger brands and clients and therefore up your model career. One such event is fashion week. If you are a model, you are on your toes the entire time during fashion week and this alone can bring you into the spotlight.

  • Travel

This is another big advantage of being a model, your work takes you places maybe domestically or internationally. The company that you work with is highly likely to pay you a certain amount as a travel allowance and apart from that, you will be getting paid for how long you are in the field. It is a very attractive career choice with many perks and advantages. Your job can take you to very different, mystique, and beautiful places that were undiscovered by you. Apart from the payment from the company, you will be paid by the brands you are endorsing.

Cons

  • The trouble with starting off

Getting established in the modeling industry is a mighty task. There are always people that are working just as hard as you are trying to get the same gig so you have to always be vigilant and ensure that your portfolio reaches where it has to. You also have to remember to stay positive and calm as you wait for your career to kick-off

  • Work drought

At the start, it is highly unlikely that you will get work, you will have to go behind companies to sign you, then wait for a shot opportunity. Sometimes the gigs are in places with low lighting so because it is your first gig, you have to make sure that you leave a good impression by not complaining and doing your part very well, and trying to get a proper picture.

  • Intense training

For a model, it is necessary to always stay in shape. You have to put your body through rigorous workouts and eat healthy to prevent any bloating and such during the shoot. There is a whole crew ready for you but if you have bodily problems, that won’t do any good for the production team.

  • Body stress

Being a model includes the long waiting and the running around. You have to be on your toes all the time, maybe even more than 12 hours a day. You have to make sure that this does not put you down. You might have to model after this 12-hour long wait and you should be up for it.

  • Negativity

There will always be negative comments about you no matter how good you do. It is inevitable. If 1000 people like your work, there will be another 1000 trying to pull you down, you have to ensure that you stay away from this negative energy and keep yourself happy and vibrant all the time. Social media is another such platform where models are often body-shamed and ridiculed.

  • The long hours

The long hours that modeling demands may have you further away from home by each passing month. You will be able to see only very little of your parents and your family but that should be a risk you are willing to take if you are stepping into a career like this.

Conclusion

Modeling is a very handsomely paying, luxurious job, once you get established, but when you’re making your way through it, it may seem like a horrible roller coaster. Every job has its ups and downs and you should go ahead and do it only if you’re physically and mentally prepared to face the challenges that life throws at you.

The negative energy, the ridicule, it will all pass one day and you will rise from its ashes if you are determined to go ahead with modeling. Another important thing to keep in mind is to be kind and understanding, the modeling industry can be very cruel, you should be strong enough to console yourself and your colleagues through tough times.

Although there are problems with each career, if the challenges make you happy, there’s no reason not to do it. Sometimes the challenges are what make you more powerful. They help you find yourself work towards a better tomorrow for you and your loved ones.
