After you have completed school and you wish to study further, you’re in confusion. And in this confusion, one of the most prominent thoughts of every student is, “Oh God, please get me in a good university!” It is a pleasant surprise to have a university sponsored by the Church. God, helping its students in His unique way. With the universities spread out across the USA and with varied courses offered, Brigham Young University fulfills the wish of every potential student out there. 

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gives the students the opportunities to grow and develop their skills and become better persons. Now I know what you’re thinking. And here I am answering that small back of the mind question. No, you don’t have to be a Mormon to attend the university. You do have to follow the honor code and a part of the honor code is the dress code. So here we are, detailing the dress code of Brigham Young University. This article is for all the students researching their universities. Yes, for all the parents worried about a potentially unsafe environment in the university too. Without any further ado, let’s begin. We will know the BYU dress code.

Brigham Young University(BYU) 

An initiative began by the Church of Latter-Day Saints, Brigham Young University(BYU, aims to help students learn and hone their skills without losing their faith and the teachings of the Lord. The university brings in a hybrid academic structure, where students learn about the subjects of their interest. However, along with these subjects, the university also has seminars about the Bible, Saints scriptures, doctrine, and religious history.

The universities are also popular research centers, where studies of all subjects are conducted with enthusiasm. There are several scientists associated with the university who have made commendable discoveries and innovations. Apart from academics, students at this university also have an opportunity to excel in the sports field of their choice. Brigham Young University gives all students the chance to bring the best out of themselves and become not just good academicians but good people as well. 

Maintaining such a success rate and training the students to such an extent requires discipline and commitment. The university mandates the students to follow their honor code. It is a part of a measure to keep the dignity and prominence of the university across the nation. It is time for all the students to now pay attention and for all parents to relax and read as the university has a strict honor code made for the benefit of the students.

The Honor Code 

The honor code laid out by Brigham Young University(BYU), consistent with the principles of the Church, applies to all members of the university – including the staff, faculty, students, and all other members associated with the community. The members have to abide by the honor code at all times within the university. The honor code states –

  • All members should be honest 
  • Live a life of celibacy 
  • Respect all the members of the community 
  • Obey the campus rules as well as the law
  • Avoid beverages containing alcohol, caffeine, tea, tobacco, or any abusive substance
  • Participate in the services of the Church 
  • Follow and abide by the dressing and grooming standards laid out 
  • Encourage others to conform to the honor code

As mentioned in the honor code, Brigham Young University(BYU) does have some dressing and grooming standards to be followed by all the members. The next and the most important section of this article lays down the dress code of the university. 

BYU Dress Code 

BYU lays out a dress code for the standard routine for students. This routine includes college classes, academic events, and some recreational activities as part of college life. The guidelines have been provided for boys as well as girls. 

For Men (Standard)

The dress and grooming of men should be modest, tidy, and consistent with the pride and honor of the Church. The dress and grooming guidelines for men state –

Clothes – Sleeveless, revealing, and skin-fit clothes are deemed inappropriate by the Church and should not be worn. Only knee-length or longer shorts should be worn. Shoes should be worn at all times on campus. 

Hair – They should be trimmed above the collar. Ears should not be covered by the hair. There can be no extreme hairstyles or any hair color. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobes.

Beard/Mustache* – Keeping a beard is prohibited by the Church. A well-trimmed mustache can be kept by men as long as it does not extend below the corners of the mouth 

Accessories – Earrings and/or any piercings have been prohibited as per the guidelines of the Church. 

* There are exemptions for the clean shaving rule in two cases:

Case 1 – A medical condition 

Case 2 – Participation in the Church’s video projects or any other media-related activity that requires a beard

For Men (Informal)

There are guidelines for attire for men for the different informal or semiformal events in the college. These specifications are as follows – 

Event Dress-code – The basic guideline for any event would be the standard dress code. Apart from that, a shirt and tie with pants are appropriate for men. Jeans are unacceptable even at informal events.

Semiformal Dance Dress-code – Men can wear a tuxedo at dances. A sports coat and tie is recommended whereas a party shirt and tie or sweater and slacks are also acceptable. Appropriate shoes are required not including sports shoes. T-shirts, jeans, and kilts are not acceptable. 

For Women (Standard)

The dress and grooming of women should be modest, neat and tidy, and consistent with the pride and honor of the Church. The dress and grooming guidelines for women state –

Clothes – Sleeve-less, strapless, backless, revealing, knee-slit, and skin-fit clothes are deemed to be inappropriate by the Church, and should not be worn. Only knee-length or below dresses, skirts, and shorts should be worn. Shoes should be worn at all times on campus.

Hair – Hairstyles should be tidy. There should not be any extreme hairstyle or any hair color. 

Accessories – More than one ear piercing per ear and any other body piercing are prohibited as per the guidelines of the Church. 

For Women (Informal)

There are guidelines for attire for women for the different informal or semiformal events in the college. These specifications are as follows – 

Event Dresscode – The basic guideline for any event would be the standard dress code. Apart from that, a dress of the appropriate length or a skirt and blouse or sweater is appropriate for women. Casual dress or clothes are unacceptable even at informal events.

Semiformal Dance Dresscode – Women can wear formal dresses at dances. A modest dress with a slit at the knee or below the knee is recommended. Appropriate shoes should be worn. Sleeveless, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap, see-through, or low-cut necklines are not allowed.
