Can seasonal jobs become permanent?

I don’t know if you know this but, the US economy’s jobs have fallen by about 11 million since the pandemic. However, some companies are hiring for the holiday season now and some workers are bypassing seasonal jobs in hopes of landing in a permanent position. But the temporary position can be the way into a great company. This article gives an answer to the question ‘Can seasonal jobs become permanent?

At-will states; how does this impact your employment status?

There are six different states in the US that are at-will states. That means the employer can get rid of you anytime. Conversely, as an employee, you can do the same. Basically, at any given moment or any given reason, you can get rid of them or they can get rid of you. Most people do not understand that, they think they are a “Permanent Employee” and we should rephrase it to “Regular Employee” since there is nothing permanent at least in California. So when you are signing a contract and see the word “at-will” you should know this.

What is better, seasonal or permanent employment?

As a seasonal employee, it is like a challenge; you get to know new people, new environment, and new culture within that company. You get to work on those relationships which refine your professional skills and set your emotional intelligence. Working as a permanent employer can be stressful because you never know when you will tire of the job.

While independent contractors thrive in a contract environment, there are some of us who would rather work permanently. And receive those associated benefits, paid holidays, and paid sick leave. Also, I understand that people, especially in difficult economic times, working as seasonal employees are not at their comfort level.

Based on the above points, you must decide what is best for you; a seasonal job or a permanent job.

Transitioning difficulties from seasonal to permanent employment

It is hard to make a transition if you are being contracted for a long time. The company is going to transfer you from place to place. If you really need to be a permanent employee, it will require you to not just work hard but you have to show the company how you will be so beneficial to them. If you see this from the company’s point of view, you will realize that the company will only be interested in people who will be helpful to them in the long term. So you will have to prove to them that you are very capable, which will not be easy and it will take some time.

How to turn your seasonal job into a permanent one?

During the holiday season, in industries all over, the work is piling up. For example, amazon hires a hundred of thousands of new associates, UPS hires a hundred thousand, FedEx hires seventy thousand. But many of these jobs are seasonal and they will go after a few months. However, some people can turn it into a permanent position.

With millions of workers looking for a job, competition for full-time employment can be fierce.

Tips to transfer seasonal employment to permanent

Here are the top six tips for you to transfer your seasonal employment to the permanent one!

1. Be 100% reliable

It goes without saying, if it fails here, a permanent job is not going to come knocking at your door. Always remember to be on time, put on that quality work, communicate with your colleagues, and be part of that business.

2. If there is extra work to be done, put your hand up

You must be willing to take on projects, extra work, even if it is not in your job description. Show them you are keen and motivated. And show that you’re not just a clock watcher, waiting to fill in your timesheet and collect another paycheck. Flexibility and work ethic will shine through when it comes to potential permanent work.

3. Start as you mean to go on

Working in a temporary or contract role will give you a front-row seat to the company’s culture, brand, and their way of working. So when a permanent job comes up, you are in pole position. You are off to head start against the competition so you must use that and treat the job as though they contracted it on paper but you are starting it as long as you are there.

4. Have the right mindset and enthusiasm

This is a big one, do not go into your seasonal assignment like a temporary worker. Do not have this mindset that you are there only for 12 weeks or 4 months, no! When you like and feel you are a part of the company, that is going to stand you in a great state of turning that seasonal role into a permanent one.

5. Let the company know you are passionate

You have to be willing to work with the company for the long term. You must do whatever is up for you with dedication and enthusiasm. Always try to stand out in the crowd and let them know that you are up for a permanent position in the company. Because in case you want permanent employment, you have to impress the managers and HR. There is no other way, so by doing this, they will keep you in mind.

6. Nurture relationships with your co-workers

Always try to observe small things about the company like the type of people who work there permanently, their work ethics, and what type of employees the company needs. This will help you improve your professional skills according to the company’s needs. And try to keep a good connection with your colleagues, HR, and managers because you will need their help to go up. So make sure to try your best to help anyone who is in need.
