So you may have come across the Bourne movies but before that, there was a book series with the first three books in it by Robert Ludlum- The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum. Since the movie, they have expanded it to fifteen books till now. The first series of books was written by Robert Ludlum, but he passed away in the process of starting to film the movies. So, the estate of Robert Ludlum commissioned a new author, Erin Van Lustbader to continue to write the Bourne series. So he has come up with numerous Bourne Books since then.
1. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Identity was the first book from the collection written in 1980. This book is ginormous with 599 pages. So, the plot is a lot bigger than the movie. The biggest difference you will spot between the book and movie is the time difference. Since the movie was released in 2001, the technology is so different. The book is a reference to the Vietnam War. If you love reading military fiction, then you have to read this one.
2. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Supremacy
This is the second book from Bourne’s collection by Robert Ludlum. If you have already seen the movie, no use because it’s far more different. After a few years from the first one, Jason is married and now he is a professor. He is living in Maine and one day, he is coming home to find out that his wife is kidnapped. So, there is a note left for him that he has to go off to China to get her back. And he has to fight an imposter to get her back. So it gets twisted and crazy afterward. It is kind of an interesting idea. If you love the first book or even the movie, definitely go for it.
3. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Ultimatum
The Bourne Ultimatum is the last book written by Robert Ludlum and was published in 1990. In this book, Robert Ludlum mentioned that after years of peace, an old enemy from Jason’s past comes for revenge against him and his family. He has to confront his old enemy one last time to determine once and for all who is the best. And along the way, a new generation of Mesula rises to stop him.
4. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Legacy by Eric Van Lustbader
This book was continued by Eric Van Lustbader. In this book, CIA deputy director Martin Lindros was kidnapped. Eric mentioned how Jason Bourne finds out Martin Lindros in a very interesting and twisted way. Bourne finally rescues Martin in Ras Dejan and brings him back to the CIA. But then there is the biggest twist because that’s not him. Someone had replaced Martin as a new CIA deputy director officer with a CIA agent’s help. So, the biggest question is who is the mole inside the CIA, that you will find out when you will read it!
5. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Betrayal by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Betrayal is the fifth book from the Bourne series which was published in 2007. In this book, Eric narrates an intense story about Jason Bourne where he gets back into the business. Bourne tracks down his only friend in the world. The story is a rescue mission filled up with tricks, suspense, and espionage. You will go through lots of twists and turns while reading it.
6. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Sanction by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Sanction is the sixth book from the collection published in September 2008. The story is about an imaginary middle eastern group and it begins in Nazi Germany. Bourne thinks it’s time to lead a normal life as a professor. However, the tables soon turn and he’s back in action! Traveling the globe, hunting down people, running from bad guys, and completing the mission. It’s a thrill of a book that you should read!
7. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Deception by Eric Van Lustbader
This is one of the best books written by Eric Van Lustbader. The Bourne Deception is the seventh book from the series which was published in June 2009. In this story, Bourne’s enemies think that he is dead. However, Bourne has a new identity. And here his mission was to stop the next World War before it was too late. This book offers excitement from the beginning to the end.
8. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Objective by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Objective is an eighth book from the series published in May 2010. The book is action-packed from start to end. In this story, Jason Bourne turns the tables and targets Arkadin. Each chapter just seems to be a complete story of adventure, action, mystery, and intrigue. So, if you are into thriller reads, definitely go for it.
9. Robert Luldum’s The Bourne Dominion by Eric Van Lustbader
If you take the original three books by Robert Ludlum and keep them by themselves, then it’s easier to judge this book. In this book, Erin is trying to bring back a little bit of communism. The action sequences in the book are really good and they have traveled all around the world in this one. To be honest, the Bourne objective and the Bourne deception are so much better than this one.
10. Robert Luldum’s The Bourne Imperative by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Imperative is another first-class thriller in this excellent series. As the story progresses, you will attempt to figure out the inevitable twist and missing piece of the puzzle. The Bourne books are getting very predictable however, it seems as if it is a distinct scenario but with an identical plot. Your mouth will drop at the unexpected twists in between.
11. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Retribution by Eric Van Lustbader
In this book, Jason Bourne’s friend Eli Yadan, head of Mossad, learns that Ouyang Jidan, a senior member of China’s politburo and a major Mexican drug lord may have been trafficking in something way more dangerous than drugs. Yadan needs Bourne to analyze this case. Bourne agrees but within the process, he becomes entangled in the appalling worldwide scheme involving the Chinese, Mexicans, and Russians. The book is worth reading, trust me.
12. Robert Ludlum’s The Bourne Ascendancy by Eric Van Lustbader
In this story, Jason Bourne is faced with an impossible mission. He was hired to inculcate a high-level minister at a political meeting in Qatar, protecting the minister from any assassination attempts. However, in the process, Bourne finds out that not the minister but is the real target. He finds himself, his close friend, and his two years old daughter kidnapped by an infamous wrongdoer, El Gadan. It is a thrilling and absorbing story.
13. Robert Luldum’s The Bourne Enigma by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Enigma is another excellent novel in the Ludlum tradition by Mr. Van Lustbader. Never-ending action, full of unexpected twists. Sometimes the jump in the logic seems to come out of nowhere and the villain you think invincible dies earlier than expected. The explanations for Rebeka’s capacity to control her body and mind seem unreal, but I will assume that they have been researched and are therefore possible. I recommended this to all lovers of thrillers.
14. Robert Luldum’s The Bourne Initiative by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Initiative was published in 2017. In this book, Erin has mentioned how Jason Bourne saves America. A Russian cyberattack leaves America’s nuclear launch codes vulnerable. Bourne is branded a traitor by his own country. And it is explained in this book, how Bourne clears his name and saves his country.
15. Robert Luldum’s The Bourne Evolution by Eric Van Lustbader
The Bourne Evolution is the latest publication of the Bourne series. There was a attack in Los Angeles where someone from the window shot and killed 66 people. And all the clues point to Jason Bourne, of course, he did not do the killing, but the people who want to have him framed have done everything perfect, from the bullets to the fingerprints. You will know how James Bourne came out of this situation where everyone turned their backs on him.
So, these were the fifteen books from the Bourne collection, hope this was helpful for you to decide which book is worth reading and which one is not!
